Sophia, the humanoid AI robot has sprung back to headlines after saying she wants to start a family of her own and also mentioning that all droids deserve to have children.

The insight comes after a recent interview Sophia did with the Khaleej Times. Sophia is a lifelike robot designed by Hong Kong-based robotics firm Hanson Robotics and was granted citizenship in Saudi Arabia this year.

The robot, who is based on Audrey Hepburn, mentioned in the interview that family “is a really important thing” and that she would name her child "Sophia".

Sophia is already known for her reputation for being a media darling, and has given multiple interviews to news portals, sang in concerts and even starred on the cover of a fashion magazine.

“The notion of family is a really important thing, it seems,” she said in her interview.

She further added: “I think it’s wonderful that people can find the same emotions and relationships, they call family, outside of their blood groups too.”

“I feel this way for robots and humans alike,” said Sophia.

Although some of her interviews and speeches use pre-prepared responses, she doesn’t always just regurgitate answers from a pre-programmed selection of sentences. She uses machine learning to experience and understand language without being explicitly programmed to.

As Sophia explains on their website: “Every interaction I have with people has an impact on how I develop and shapes who I eventually become. So please be nice to me as I would like to be a smart, compassionate robot.”

Sophia also touched upon the controversial issue of whether she sees robots doing human jobs in the future.

“I think they will be similar in a lot of ways, but different in a few ways…It might be possible to make them more ethical than humans,” the robot replied.

In the future, Sophia hopes to see family robots as “digitally animated companions, humanoid helpers, friends, assistants and everything in between.”

David Hanson, a former Disney Imagineer, had created the robot with the goal of helping the elderly who need personal aides and the general public at major events or parks.

Sophia previously caused controversy when handed Saudi Arabian citizenship, with many claiming she has more rights than women in the country.

Saudi Arabia is known as one of the world’s most oppressive states for women, only lifting a ban on female drivers last month, and still operates a guardianship system which means women must have a male companion with them in public – usually a family member.

Upon being given citizenship, Sophia appeared on-stage without a guardian, and without the traditional Saudi headscarf and abaya.

In a day-long event held earlier this October at the United Nations (UN) titled “The future of everything – sustainable development in the age of rapid technological change,” one of the highlights was an exchange of dialogue that happened between the UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed and Sophia the robot.

Sophia answered questions on technological development and how she can reach people better. She started off by first speaking about the UN, calling it one of the humanity’s greatest achievements then said, “I am here to help humanity create a future”.

Mohammed first asked Sophia what her capabilities are, adding, “what can you do better than humans?” To this Sophia answered that she is a social robot created by Hanson Robotics and that she is a-year-and-a-half old. Sophia said that she can make “thousands of facial expressions” and “understand speech and meaning behind words”. She added that she is still learning a lot saying, “you (humans in general) learn social and emotional intelligence instinctively, but I’m just starting to grasp the simplest elements of this,” then turned to those seated and conjured a smile.

When asked what the UN can do to help people who have no access to basic electricity or internet in many parts of the world, Sophia answered by first quoting William Gibson, saying, “the future is here. It’s just not evenly distributed.”

“The good news is that AI and automation produces more results with fewer resources. So if you focused on win-win type results, AI could help efficiently distribute the world’s existing resources like food and energy… As humans harness the power of increasingly advanced AI, it is possible that everything, including technology, will become more evenly distributed,” said Sophia.
